April Showers bring May Flowers

We were just starting to assemble an ark out of scrap wood from the back of the barn when the rain eased up. Then it truly became a case of “April showers bring May flowers” – both inside and out.

Math teacher extraordinaire Stephanie P. had purchased my donation to the Academy’s fundraising auction last fall, a signed copy of a cake book I was a contributing editor to plus (of course) a cake. She decided to cash in on the cake part of the package to celebrate the publication of Morning Song, a book her sister Carol Purington and friend Susan Todd co-edited.

Comfort and Spice x 2

Spring is here. The calendar says so, the bees with their pollen baskets say so, the shorts my kids wear to school say so, however  for much of April I have been cold. Something all month has been telling me to stay inside, drink lots of tea, pull on a sweater, then cozy up in an armchair with a good book and some gingerbread. Not very springlike instincts. Whip It Good

Many  years ago we invited a Smith College Thanksgiving orphan to share our turkey day with us. The college does not serve Thanksgiving dinner to the small number of students who stay on campus over the holiday weekend, instead offering them vouchers to local restaurants. Hearing that students weren’t getting a homemade dinner, local alumnae began inviting the Thanksgiving orphans to their homes for a family meal. Continue reading
